The US Army gave rise to the term PMO and provided the basic concepts that evolved to support the current definitions of the Project Office. They developed a project office function in the 1930s to monitor aircraft construction, and in the 1950s they needed an approach to centralize the system’s multiple development efforts to streamline budget management. Since then, the concept of PMO has been extended to other industries, such as construction and financial services, generally in relation to the increase of information technology.
